Heads up: Upcoming downtime for all Stratepedia sites

KU’s IT people are going to be working on the campus network on Sunday the 30th. This will affect everything on Stratepedia. If something goes south we’ll do our best to let you know on our Twitter account.

NETWORK UPGRADE

WHEN: Sunday, December 30th from 12:01 a.m. to 12:00 noon (12 hours)

IMPACT: Off-campus access to all KU technology services (web pages,
email, Kyou portal, Blackboard, etc.) will be unavailable. On campus
access to the Internet and KU technology services will likely be
unavailable also.

IMPORTANCE: This is part of a major network project that will double the
campus’ capacity to handle incoming internet traffic, as well as enhance
the reliability of network security systems to protect KU’s data assets.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

The Eee PC super-mobile computer

I’ve been playing around with an ASUS Eee PC mobile computer this week. The lowdown: This is a super-small mobile computer, 7 inches wide and weighing in around 2 pounds, with built-in wireless, speakers, and an optional camera. It comes out of the box with a stripped-down version of Linux, an office application suite, Internet applications, and a few other goodies; you can opt to run Windows XP on it if you’d prefer. The model I got has 512 MB of memory and 4 GB of storage. No CD drive or big hard drive, but plenty of USB ports and a SD card slot (similar to what your digital camera might use) for extra room.

Here’s what I like:

  • It’s so light and portable!
  • The bundled operating system is pretty customizable, and people are already developing some interesting hacks
  • Only 400 bucks

Here’s what I don’t care for:

  • The keyboard is super-small and the number keys are shifted one space to the left. Typing is even more difficult than on an iPhone
  • Many applications and websites, including some pre-installed, don’t work well on the Eee PC’s small screen
  • The built-in camera doesn’t work with AIM or Skype (yet)

If you use your laptop for more than just e-mail and web browsing I don’t know that I’d recommend replacing it with this–but if you’ve got some other computer for your heavy-duty work this might be a nice accessory for you road warriors. As for me, I’m debating whether I can get away with just bringing this along with me while I’m out of town next week, or bringing my MacBook so I can keep working on the new Library–

Stratepedia Library Preview #3

Resource sharing has been totally overhauled in the new Library–you can now add multiple files to a resource (if you have a file in GIST, PDF, and JPG formats, for example), and you can share a resource across multiple groups (say you’re a PDer and have a top-notch example you always want to share–no more adding the same resource a hundred times). See it in action in this video clip. Read the rest of this entry

Flight tracking built into Google!

I know many of you spend quite a bit of time in the air–or more appropriately, waiting in airports. You probably knew you could track flights online, but now it’s super-easy thanks to Google: Just type your airline and flight number into the Google search field (see below) for the flight’s current status. (And yes, I checked; it works on an iPhone!)

Stratepedia Library Preview #2

Here’s the second in a series of sneak peaks of the forthcoming Stratepedia Library. Today, let’s look at the new feature for groups!

Stratepedia Library Preview #1

Hey, the new Stratepedia Library is almost here! Over the next few days I’m going to share some video previews. Today’s shows off the basics of the new interface and the simplified Dashboard. Read the rest of this entry

Dossier updates delayed–

I found something I want to get fixed in Dossier–so that update I mentioned yesterday is getting pushed back to Monday. Sorry!

The Stratepedia Library is getting close–

Last summer I talked quite a bit about the new Stratepedia Library, the successor to the Content Enhancement Library you all know. Guess what? It’s getting close. In the next few days, as I have time, I’ll start sharing some video clips here highlighting the new features, such as the new dashboard, improved sharing, and multiple file format options.

Also, early next week, I hope to start providing a hands-on preview to people who ask me nicely. Want to ask me nicely? Just comment on this post–

Dossier updates coming tomorrow, December 14

Mark, our new programmer, and I have finished some of the changes to Dossier people have been anticipating for awhile–namely, some different options to visualize data from an assessment. We’ll be moving these to the server sometime tomorrow morning evening. Dossier will be unavailable for roughly 30 minutes during this time. The new visualization allows you to toggle each question between a table view of data and a pretty bar chart. Down the road we’ll add other visual options.Mark is now working on the much-anticipated data import feature–stay tuned!

Become a Learning Labs power user with Moodle Mondays

Have you checked out the Learning Labs support area lately? Amber and I did a little restructuring–in addition to some quick answers to commonly asked questions, Amber’s also started a weekly post to the group forum called Moodle Monday. Moodle Monday goes beyond the Learning Labs Guidebook to tackle some of the larger issues involved when getting people to work together online.

Amber’s posted two topics so far. Curious about how to foster better participation in your online group or present data in a meaningful, effective way? Check out the conversations, or sign in with your Learning Labs account to add your own thoughts. And be sure to check back every week for a new topic.
