Thoughts on Color

Color Example 1

This is not a far stretch from some of the Powerpoint documents I’ve come across. Let’s take a look at this and figure out some ways to make it look nicer.

Tip 1: Figure out what emotion you want to convey and try to choose colors that are appropriate.

I want this slide to show off how great of a place Lawrence is. In this example, my target audience is going to be conference attendees, so they will most likely be ages 30-60. The current color scheme includes a lot of primary colors which might make Lawrence seem like a pre-school and I want to go for a little more elegance, but still make it seem interesting. Where can you find color palates that are age appropriate? A great place to start is a magazine that is geared towards your audience. I might choose a Martha Stewart Living cover, for example. It also uses reds and blues which are KU’s school colors!

Another place to look for color schemes is in famous works of art. The old masters new what they were doing when it came to color, so check out a website like the Artchive for some more color inspiration.

If you’re trying to pick colors that fit your personality, my favorite place to look is in your own closet! You usually buy clothes that fit your color preferences, so just looking through your wardrobe can give you lots of great color ideas that you’ll like!

This was great! It really made me think about my use of pictures with text. Changing the campus image made all the difference.
