What to expect with iPhone 3.0

I know there are quite a few people at the CRL and in the SIM® network with iPhones now. You’ve probably heard that a new iPhone (the iPhone 3G S; say that three times fast) is being released tomorrow. The 3G S boasts faster hardware, a better camera with video, a built-in compass, and other hardware-based upgrades. However, if you’ve got last year’s model (or, like me, the 2007 vintage) you’ve got updates in store, too.

ReadWriteWeb has a good write-up on what to expect from the new iPhone OS 3.0. A quick rundown includes improved search, cut/copy/paste (finally!), and voice memos, along with several general speed and usability enhancements. These updates will be available for free to existing iPhone owners. If you’ve got an iPod touch you can get in on the update, but it will cost $9.95 due to how Apple accounts for these devices differently than iPhones.

To upgrade your iPhone or iPod touch, you’ll need to have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer, then sync the phone and the computer. This will probably take some time, so plan ahead! Perhaps you’d like to peruse the Hello archives while you wait.
